Our WHY
The collective WHY statement of
Ecovilla San Mateo neighbours
Community by design
Creating genuine community, the kind where people actually feel known, where trust runs deep, and where life together feels truly alive, does not happen by accident.
At Ecovilla San Mateo, we engage consciously in crafting the culture that we want to be part of. One that supports each of us in living our fullest lives, building deep and meaningful relationships, and discovering our unique place in a vibrant, purposeful community.
We are practicing how to live regeneratively on every level.
Ecovilla is a place that welcomes people from every background and belief. Because we believe it’s possible to live a more beautiful life through deeper connection with ourselves, each other, and nature. Our differences make us stronger. Over forty nationalities are represented here, and that mix is part of what keeps this community alive.
Our idea of community doesn’t ask anyone to give up who they are. It makes room for each person’s path, and we want everyone here to grow into their fullness and their own gifts. We believe in asking questions like these:
- What if real change can include beauty and joy?
- What if, instead of fear, we choose to respond with love?
- What if we don’t wait for the perfect plan, and trust that this is good enough to get going?
Five commitments we live by
These commitments were shaped by conversations, frameworks, and the lived experience of more than a hundred of us who call this valley home. None of us has this figured out, and that’s rather the point. Every one of us holds a hand in shaping what comes next.
Our commitments aren’t rules, and nobody signs anything, or enforces them. They’re a shared orientation we opt into together, knowing they’ll evolve as we do. They exist because genuine community doesn’t happen by hoping people will treat each other well. It happens when people consciously practice it.
We take responsibility for our own experience.
When something is hard, we try asking what's ours to learn from it, rather than waiting for someone else to change first. This is what lets trust grow between neighbours.
We stay curious.
Growth lives in the space between what we know and what we don't yet understand. When an opinion or a story about someone starts to feel fixed, we try to stay open long enough to ask what else might be true.
We practice appreciation and generosity.
There's always more going well than we tend to notice. Choosing to see it doesn't mean ignoring real challenges. It means meeting them from a place that has more to give.
We address tension directly and respectfully.
Tension is information, not a problem to avoid. We try to bring what feels off straight to the person involved, with honesty and care, rather than letting it grow into distance.
We remember we're experimenting.
We're building something that hasn't existed here before, and that comes with real uncertainty. We try to hold our plans lightly and treat the moments things don't go as expected as valuable information, not failure.
Learning as we go
These commitments aren’t asking anyone to be agreeable. They ask for authenticity and courage, and the willingness to re-orient, again and again, toward what we want to create. And to practice new ways of being that honor healthy individuality as the ground of thriving interdependence.
What becomes possible when we actually trust each other? When honesty feels safe, and relationships feel like a resource rather than a risk? We’re here to find out.
